U of Texas Atheists exchange Bibles for porn, giving me a reason to visit Texas

analBigOkay, okay!  Religion day is rolling along here at Making a Mockery, with this latest hilarious news out of the University of Texas San Antonio.  A group called Atheists Agenda — who is probably in bed with their Gay, Commie, and Red Homo agenda-ist brethren — has established a station where students can exchange their bibles for sweet sweet pornography.

The Paisano, the independent student newspaper of UT, reports:

Playboy, Penthouse and other adult magazines were exchanged for Bibles, Torahs, Korans, and other religious texts at the annual Smut for Smut event hosted by the UTSA Atheist Agenda on March 1.

A screaming, singing throng of UTSA students circled around the steps running from the JPL to the MS, anchored to a small booth offering the strange trade as opponents of the Atheist Agenda’s methods gathered in protest.

I’m kind of ambivalent about this kind of action.  On the one hand, life is short, so have fun with your over-the-top stunt, Atheists Agenda.  If I were still in college, I’d probably be out there with you.  Your overall point — that the Bible, taken as a whole, is an awful source of morality — is right on, and it’s a point that’s worth repeating.

On the other hand, it’s frustrating when atheists gets dismissed as condescending assholes, which, sadly, it is very easy to do with this group.  And although an action like this vaguely gets people talking about religion, the focus often begins and ends on the tactics of the group — Are they being respectful enough!?!?!?! or Is this effective!?!?!?! — and, frankly, that’s not a very interesting discussion if you ask me.

Better to ask people to read Richard Dawkins and see if it hits with them than to ensure that one’s adversaries have an cartoon strawman to kick around.

The last word goes to a commenter on BoingBoing, who correctly writes:

Most porn has gotten so formulaic and boring in the last few years, the Bible might actually be more stimulating.

Amen, and all praise to Allah.

Is this group, Atheists’ Agenda, legit? Smells kind of whiffy. Years back, “undercover” campus conservative groups were known to create uproars by filing the paperwork needed to start university-sanctioned and student fee-supported “bestiality clubs.” They then thoughtfully, if anonymously, alerted the media to the evil that was pervading college campuses. Oh what fun they had!
